What a year 2017 has been for music, right? I thought I’d list some of the albums that I think are right up there with being the best releases of 2017, so far… we still have like a good months left and a lot more music to be released but hey, let’s revisit this list at the end of the year?
DEAN LEWIS – SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT EP
I’ve got to show some love to my Australian fellas… Dean Lewis broke onto the scene earlier this year/late last year with his debut release Waves. If I remember rightly, Waves was played religiously throughout the Channel 7 show “Home and Away” and this is how I found out about him. He has since followed up the success of Waves with single Need You Know and Lose My Mind (not yet confirmed 99% sure it will be his next single…) and his EP, Same Kind Of Different. He has just finished up a east coast tour of Australia and will be returning again in November for a full blown national tour.
I saw him only two weeks ago while he was performing in Melbourne and I couldn’t praise this boy higher, he is such a talent and knows how to write a good tune! Plus could he be any nicer? You definitely need to grab tickets to see one of his shows!

DUA LIPA – DUA LIPA
I feel like the entire world is sleeping on Dua Lipa. Her debut release, Dua Lipa is a masterpiece. I think any girl could relate to the lyrics and find a favourite on this album. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to this in it’s entirety… I feel like it’s at least once a day? Haha! Dua is a singer, songwriter and model from London, England. Since the age of 14, she has been covering songs on YouTube and was signed to Warner Music in 2015. This is going to be one girl to watch!
SONGS TO CHECK OUT : Homesick, New Rules, Genesis and No Goodbyes
LANY – LANY
LANY are a 3 piece American alternative band from LA. LANY have been around since 2014 but only seemed to of gained popularity/become more mainstream in late 2016/early 2017. Well at least that’s when I found out about them? LANY are Paul Klein, Jake Goss and Les Priest. You may know there tracks ILYSB, Pink Skies and yeah babe, no way or like you lots from their earlier releases. Their lyrics are relatable and true to life, their melodies are catchy and you’ll find yourself bopping away without even realising it. I can see this guys blowing up big in the next 12 or so months, kind of like how The 1975 did and to be honest, I can see why. They’re that good!
SONGS TO CHECK OUT: The Breakup, Super Far, Good Girls and ILYSB
OH WONDER – ULTRALIFE
To be honest, I only found out about Oh Wonder earlier this year from my beautiful friend Sam. I always saw her talking on Twitter about this band called OW/Oh Wonder and thought to myself, I HAD to check these guys out and I’m glad I did. Oh Wonder are Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West who are from the UK and are what you’d called Alt-Pop in the land genres hahaha! Ultralife is their second album and it’s another one that I’ve found myself listening to on the regular lately.
SONGS TO CHECK: High On Humans, Heart Strings, Bigger Than Love & My Friends
LORDE – MELODRAMA
Melodrama is kiwi born Lorde’s second studio album and I kind of wanna say, it’s just as good if not better than her first release; Pure Heroine. I would describe Lorde as eclectic, artistic and not afraid to be herself. What’s not to love about that? Just do yourself a favour and listen to this album, you won’t regret it!
SONGS TO CHECK OUT: Homemade Dynamite, Sober, The Louvre & Perfect Places
MUNA – About You
I literally only found out about MUNA about half an hour to a hour before writing this blog post but I can already tell you, their album About You is about to be on repeat. I thought I’d give them a whirl prior to seeing them support Harry Styles in December because who wants to sit through the support act and not know anything, right? Well I’m glad I did!
SONGS TO CHECK OUT: If You Love Me Know (probably my favourite so far)
RAG ‘N’ BONE MAN – HUMAN
I feel like I’m one of the only people that appreciate how talented this guy is. Another talent from the UK (I swear there is something in the water over there, right?) who has seemingly been around a LOT longer than what most of us know… HAHA! If you don’t know who he is yet, you know his husky deep voice and you’ve probably heard his song “Human”. Give his album a whirl on Spotify and lemme know what you think?
SONGS TO CHECK OUT: Human, Love You Any Less & Bitter End
JULIA MICHAELS – NERVOUS SYSTEM EP
If you don’t know who Julia Michaels is, you know songs that she has written. Her debut single Issues was a massive hit here in Australia. Her EP Nervous System is a 7 track release and explicitly showcases Michaels, writing talents. You can witness her infectious personality and quirks in her live performances and interviews. Like LANY, I can see Julia making 2018, her bitch.
SONGS TO CHECK OUT: Worst In Me & Pink
HAIM – SOMETHING TO TELL YOU
HAIM are another group that I’ve not paid to much attention to in the past. I don’t know why but I sure as hell, know that I’ve been missing out on a talented bunch of sisters! The album is full of bops and I can’t recommend it high enough!
SONGS TO CHECK OUT: Something To Tell You, Walking Away & Ready For You
I’ve also got to show some love to Harry Styles’ debut release, Perennial by Vera Blue, Ed Sheeran’s Divide, Theia’s debut EP and I may be a little bias but my good pal, Trent Bell released a pretty epic EP too!
One thing, I’ve noticed is that I have a penchant for songs with lyrics that I can relate too or are meaningful in one way or another. What albums/artists or songs have you been listening to this year? Do you agree with the albums I’ve named or have you got ones of your own? Let’s chat in the comments below!
